It’s not an essay type that’s extremely common in most English or literature classes.

That just means that if you do run into one, it can be more intimidating.

A very basic way of thinking about literary theory is that these ideas act as different lenses critics use to view and talk about art, literature, and even culture.

These different lenses allow critics to consider works of art based on certain assumptions within that school of theory.

For example, in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Gulliver notes in one of his letters that he had written "for [people's] amendment, and not their approbation", reflecting the belief at the time that the novel was primarily a method for instruction of the populace, and entertainment was only a secondary goal.
